08.03.2010 - 29.11.2019

TE DEUM BY ARVO PÄRT
ENSEMBLE 96 AND DAN STYFFE
CONDUCTOR KJETIL ALMENNING

Monday 8 March 7.30 pm
Frogner Church

Enchanting music from the Renaissance to our times.

The double-bassist Dan Styffe and chamber choir Ensemble 96 will be performing a beautiful and meditative concert featuring works by Arvo Pärt (*1935), György Kurtág (*1926) and Pierre de La Rue (ca. 1452-1518). Styffe plays on one of the world's oldest and best instruments; a double bass from the latter half of the 1500s. We will have the opportunity to hear this astonishing instrument in pieces for double bass by György Kurtág, and in Pärt’s minimalistic Spiegel im Spiegel, accompanied by pianist Gonzalo Moreno. Ensemble 96 is led by the choir master of Bergen Cathedral, Kjetil Almenning, and will perform Pärt’s Triodion and de La Rue's O Salutaris Hostia. At the concert an orchestra will also contribute consisting of some of our most outstanding young string players who, in collaboration with Ensemble 96 and Styffe, will perform Pärt’s beautiful Te Deum for choir, orchestra and prepared piano.

Dan Styffe (double bass) was born in Sweden but has spent his whole professional career in Oslo. He is a key figure in Norwegian music, both as a soloist double bassist in Oslo Philharmonic and as a teacher at The Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due School of Music. Styffe regularly takes part at international and national music festivals as a soloist and chamber musician. He has commissioned and performed a number of world premieres for double bass and may be heard as a soloist on three recordings for the Simax Classics label. Styffe’s double bass was made by Gaspar da Salo at the end of the 1500s and is owned by Dextra Musica.

Ensemble 96 is one of the top Norwegian vocal ensembles and its concerts, premieres and cds have been warmly received at home and aboard. The choir’s main field of interest is contemporary music; it has also been awarded funding from the Arts Council Norway. Ensemble 96 – with its former conductor Øystein Fevang – won a top choral award in 2007 and was nominated for two Grammies for its latest cd, Immortal Nystedt. Kjetil Almenning has been artistic director of the choir since 2007.

Kjetil Almenning (conductor) is Bachelor of Church Music which he read at the Norwegian Academy of Music; he also has a diploma in choral music from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Almenning has previously conducted Ginnungagap, Vestoppland Chamber Choir and the Norwegian Youth Choir and has worked with ensembles such as the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, the Barents International Chamber Choir, Eric Ericson’s Kammarkör and the Swedish Radio Choir as a singer and conductor. Since 2009 Almenning has been choir master at Bergen Cathedral. He was recently awarded the prestigious Eric Ericson Award 2009

Gonzalo Moreno (piano) was born in Madrid where he studied at the conservatoire of music and has also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has also studied at The Norwegian Academy of Music. Moreno is solo pianist with Oslo Philharmonic, and has participated as a soloist and chamber musician at a number of Norwegian festivals. Moreno collaborates closely with Styffe, and has played on all his recordings.

This concert is supported by Dextra Musica.
